Brief Encounters: The Future of Public Art in East London

In June 2011 the Contemporary Art Society curated the event Brief Encounters: The Future of Public Art in East London for the Create Festival.
Celebrating inspirational public art projects across the 2012 host boroughs, the evening provided a rare opportunity for artists, art commissioners and curators to explore the successes of their projects and consider how similar ventures can continue in the future.
Presentations focussed on key projects in the boroughs and raised key issues including the importance of culturally led regeneration, how to keep communities at the heart of projects and concerns about gentrification agendas that can exclude local communities.

Speakers included:
• Artists Gavin TurkNeville GabieFaisal Abdu’Allah and Nina Pope (Pope & Guthrie)
• Head of Art on the Underground Tamsin Dillon
• Curator Julia Royse and Commissioner Corinna Pyke
• Up Projects director Emma Underhill
• Invisible Dust director Alice Sharp
• Not for profit architecture collective Assemble
Speakers and guests stayed late into the evening to continue conversations, take a ride on Gavin Turk and Ben Wilson’s 4H bike and enjoy a special performance from Matt Stokes film The Stratford Gaff: A Serio-Comick-Bombastick-Operatick Interlude.
The event concluded The Contemporary Art Society’s year-long programme of research and advisement to the five Host Boroughs on public art commissioning practice within local authority contexts.
